Keep The Ball Rolling

Ben Swithen The whole of the 'I Suppose They Were Better off As Dead' EP is excellent, but this track is my personal favourite, so I've been glad to pick up the mildly-longer single version. The bass and drums are so insistent that the rolling ball of the middle section sounds alarmingly ominous. It's hard to listen to this without foreseeing a disastrous future.

The first day of the snow,
In a DIY home,
Covered in ash and feeling alone,
Watch them crawl about your ankles,
Through the walls cold hands can't help but feel for warmth,
It's a haunting,
The ghosts at the door won't stay hidden anymore.

Now facing our way,
And calling our names,
Through gritted teeth on withered frames,
Staring with empty eyes held straight,
Not looking back,
At the state we left our bedclothes in,
Whitewash the cracks to keep the rot from spilling.

Hide the evidence quick,
And keep passing the buck,
Find one person on whom the blame won't come unstuck,
In our hands we let the milk sour,
Let the cat out the bag at the eleventh hour,
And our bleeding hearts won't fix what our greedy mouths won't cease to grip.

And I can keep the ball rolling until the ball rolls on me,
And I can keep my hands moving until my hands start to freeze.
